An Anomaly is someone who has committed heinous crimes such as murder, rape, or other such offenses. The Markhams' real son was supposedly killed by an Anomaly (this Anomaly was not caught). They are usually then deported to the Outer Provinces, where they are killed off by the Society. They are considered to be very dangerous. They are not allowed to have artifacts or tablets.
Some Anomalies lived in the Carving. They were referred to as the farmers. They used equipment stolen from the Society and grow their own food. In Crossed, Ky, Vick, Eli, Cassia, and Indie meet Hunter, an Anomaly, who lived in a township in the Carving. They examine the paintings, books, poems, and houses of the farmers who lived there before fleeing from the Society's attack on the Carving.
